This is for the Birds
To Kill a Mockingbird
You have already compared yourself to a character from Separate Peace. Now we would like you to venture beyond merely comparing yourself to another human. You are to compare yourself to a BIRD.
Different birds symbolize different characteristics. Consider our discussion of symbolism in class today and how a tree may be representative of (an allegory for) the tree of knowledge in the Bible. The tree in the novel and pictured on the cover of TKAM, therefore, reflects the theme of the loss of innocence in exchange for knowledge.
The mockingbird is a predominant symbol in TKAM. As you read the novel in the coming weeks, you will come to understand which characters the mockingbird can represent.
Until then, click on the link below - even extend your search beyond this one site - to determine which bird best represents/symbolizes you.
This is the start of your next essay.
