English 6, 7, 8: Writing Guide

Title of Your Essay

Intro paragraph
  • Hook/Lead - an interesting statement that catches the reader’s attention.  This is the FIRST sentence of your intro paragraph.
    • Consider these ways to start a hook/lead:  
    • detail
    • quotation (ex. “We wanted to define her, to wrap her up as we did each other, but we could not…” p. 11)
    • setting - time and/or place (ex. write about Mica High School for Hillari Kimble)
    • dialogue
    • bold statement/opinion (ex. Leo is the most selfish boyfriend ever. OR Leo is more in love with himself than with Stargirl.)
    • character trait (ex. Stargirl is a unique leader.)
    • statistic
    • question, (ex. Does Leo really love Stargirl?  OR Would you want a tomato thrown in your face?)
    • action (ex. She even cheered for the other team.)
  • Thesis statement Thesis answers a question (ex. Which character are you most like?)
  • After your thesis statement, mention the Title and author of the novel.
  • After your thesis statement list three (For this character essay, we are only asking for two, however.) reasons why you are most like this character. (ex. confident, helpful)
  • Your thesis statement is the LAST sentence of your intro paragraph.

Body paragraphs

  • explain the reasons with details, specifics, even quotes from the novel
  • TELL AND SHOW
  • They are sequnced the same way you introduced them in the introductory paragraph.
