2015 MacLane Poetry Guidelines and Timeline

MacLane Poetry Recitation Guidelines & Timeline

  • 14 lines minimum
  • 2 minutes maximum
  • approved by English teacher, to judge for literary value
  • each student in the Middle School has a different poem
  • Once approved: Email your selection to Ms. Ridinger: willa.ridinger@thecountryschool.org
  • Hand in hard copy of your poem to your English teacher
  • no songs
  • no retired poems
  • no poems that were in the prior year’s finals; this list has been shared with you.
  • Students may not recite his/her same poem from one year to the next
Classroom component
  • Time allotted to peruse poetry anthologies
  • Assignment given in conjunction with the recitation
  • Each student will recite for his/her teacher  prior to the recitation.In grades 6, 7 & 8, this will be a graded assignment on Thursday, January 30 and Friday, January 31.
  • Students will review the skills of recitation
  • Classroom time will be blocked out to prepare for poetry
  • Judging criteria shared with students
  • Each grade will have a project to complete.  Details to follow.

Judging
  • For semi-finals, judges come from within the school
  • Finalist judges are not from faculty

Dress Code
  • Students and teachers should be dressed up for the preliminary and final events – teachers and grades for their own recitation, all dressed for finals
  • Dressed up looks like:
    • For girls – dresses or skirts within dress code length, dress pants, shoes, but no overly HIGH heels or rain boots!  
    • For boys – blazers, ties, dress shirts, nice pants, shoes - not sneakers
Friday, 1/9/2015:
  • Last day for choosing a poem. As soon as a student selects a poem, his or her English teacher must approve it.
  • Then the student must email the poem choice to Ms. Ridinger to reserve the selection.
  • If a student waits until Jan 16, that child must come to school with 3 (THREE) choices, in case someone else has chosen the same poem first.  We will use the date and time stamp from your email as a determining factor.
  • Students must hand in a TYPED copy of their poems.

Monday, January 26
  • Your poem must be memorized by this date. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will be graded on  memorization and presentation.

Tuesday, 2/3 Dress-up day for All Middle School
  • Fifth and sixth grade poetry recitation from 8:30 - 10.
  • Students will pick numbers to determine their order.

Wednesday, 2/4 Dress-up day for All Middle School
  • 7th and 8th grade poetry recitation from 8:30- 10.
  • Students will pick numbers to determine their order.

Friday, 2/13 Dress-up day for All Middle School
  • Poetry Recitation Finals
